can't stop making things!
Mariana S. Belaval is a writer, director, and content creator whose work bridges film, advertising, and digital media. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico and now based in Chicago, she crafts bold, emotionally resonant stories that reflect Caribbean identity while connecting to broader cultural landscapes.
Her films, rooted in poetic realism, social awareness, and collaborative creativity, explore themes of generational memory, queer survival, and the fragile ties between people and place. She has received recognition through grants and festivals, including the Johnnie Walker Keep Walking Films award, Quarterfinalist at the Manchester Film Festival, and Official Selection at the Paramount Film Festival.
Beyond the festival circuit, Mariana brings her narrative eye to digital media and branded content, directing music videos, reels, and collaborations with artists and local businesses. With professional training from the University of Chicago (M.A. in Cinema Studies, 2025) and Columbia College Chicago (B.A. in Filmmaking, 2024), she combines academic insight with hands-on production experience.
Fully bilingual in English and Spanish with native-level proficiency, Mariana is eager to collaborate with others who see storytelling as a tool for connection, reflection, and cultural exchange.
